Parcells, Shields in line for Hall of Fame election

Parcells and Shields, along with running backs Jerome Bettis and Curtis Martin and wide receivers Tim Brown, Cris Carter and Andre Reed, advanced from a list of 26 semi-finalists.Also in contention for enshrinement are defensive tackle Cortez Kennedy, cornerback Aeneas Williams and defensive ends Chris Doleman and Charles Haley.The Hall’s 44-member selection committee is scheduled to meet in Indianapolis on February 4, on the eve of the Super Bowl, to decide who will be enshrined in its class of 2012.To be selected, a finalist must receive at least 80 percent of the vote.Parcells won Super Bowl rings with the New York Giants in 1987 and 1991 and went on to coach the New England Patriots and the New York Jets before retiring in 1999. He then returned to coach the Dallas Cowboys from 2003 to 2006.Shields played his entire National Football League career with the Kansas City Chiefs, never missing a game in 14 seasons. He is widely considered one of the greatest offensive linemen of all time.To be eligible for election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, modern-era players and coaches must be retired for at least five consecutive seasons.
